The Mayor of Lisbon Fernando Medina has promised to provide in 2019 about 800 new housing units for more than 3,000 people.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

The Lisbon City Council delivered on Monday the first 50 houses of a group of more than 800 planned for this year, benefiting more than three thousand people, according to the mayor, Fernando Medina.<\/p>\r\n

“The Lisbon City Council in 2019, will guarantee the right to housing to more than three thousand people. We are talking about 800 houses that will be delivered to the population”, within the framework of the different programs of the municipality, said the mayor.<\/p>\r\n

“This is a very significant figure which, not solving all the problems (…), is already a very significant contribution” to solving at least the situation of around three thousand people who previously did not have access to housing and who will be able to do so thanks to municipal policy”, he added.<\/p>\r\n

Fernando Medina (PS) was speaking to journalists at the delivery of the first 50 houses in the Boavista district, which is currently being renovated in Lisbon.<\/p>\r\n

The re-housing of the inhabitants of the 510 houses in the district is divided into five phases, resulting in almost 500 new houses, ranging from 1 to 4 bedrooms. This first phase, which represents a real estate investment in Lisbon<\/a> of around \u20ac5 million, will provide accommodation for 130 people, the Council said.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n

This new architectural project, “A house that grows with the family”, which is also being implemented in the Padre Cruz and Red Cross neighbourhoods, “is sustainable in terms of the environment and the quality of the houses, for the characteristics of the construction and materials used, the scalability, for easy maintenance with accessibility, as well as for energy efficiency, using rainwater and solar energy”, says the municipality.<\/p>\r\n

“Social housing cannot be a second quality housing, it must be a first quality housing, with the best materials, with the best architectural solutions, respectful of the environment, adapted to the life cycle, that is to say, with fewer obstacles”, defended Medina.<\/p>\r\n

The Lisbon City Council has also already allocated, for this year, 330 assisted income houses for “families with more needs”.<\/p>\r\n

The head of the municipal executive said in February that the allocation of housing under the rental support scheme, “for the whole of 2019”, would take place by the end of March, in order “to anticipate the peace of mind of families, who will be able to know in advance which house they will be allocated”.<\/p>\r\n

Monday’s ceremony was also attended by the councillor for housing, Paula Marques (Citizens for Lisbon, elected on the PS list), the president of the Benfica parish council, In\u00eas Drummond (PS), the Associa\u00e7\u00e3o Recreativa de Moradores e Amigos do Bairro da Boavista, the president of the municipal company Gebalis – Gest\u00e3o dos Bairros Municipais de Lisboa, as well as the president of the Lisbon Municipal Assembly, Helena Roseta.<\/p>\r\n
