Albufeira in Algarve
Once a fishing village with small white houses, today it is an extremely popular resort in the Algarve. The name of the town comes from the Mauritanian language and means “castle at sea”. The sandy beach of the bay, the hills on which most of the hotels are located, the pedestrian streets with many restaurants and cafés, as well as the nightlife complete the picture of the village.
Albufeira is located in the central Algarve in the part called The Windward Algarve, characterized by a mild and pleasant climate with high temperatures in summer. The sea is characterized by sandy beaches and cliffs, while the northern part of the lush Mediterranean vegetation is adorned with orange, olive and fig trees. The village is located 45 km. from the airport (60-90 min.), more than 19,000 residents live there permanently.
History of Albufeira in Algarve
Their presence in the region was first marked by the Romans, then by the Moors – they gave the colony the name Al-Buhera (“castle at sea”). After the expulsion of the Moors, the city developed economically due to the intensification of trade with the cities of the Mediterranean, which was followed by the period of the great discoveries. In the 18th century, a series of tragic consequences of earthquakes followed. The city lost its importance. However, the 19th century brought a rebirth of its former glory. In the 1960s, Albufeira became a well-known tourist centre, which led to an important development that continues to this day.
Tourism in Albufeira
- A beautiful walk is worth the detour: Cerro da Vila – you will be surprised by the white houses contrasting pleasantly with the blue sky and the narrow, quiet streets with taverns and bars.
- On Travessa da Igreja velha there is a Moorish park where a mosque once stood.
- The most important monument in the town is the old 18th century church with an impressive bell tower. In the centre is a statue of Our Lady Nossa Senhora da Conceição from the 18th century and Nossa Senhora da Orada from the 15th century, which the fishermen carry in their annual procession.
