Vilamoura in Algarve
Vilamoura is mainly associated with a marina, a marina surrounded by “multi-star” hotels and green golf courses. This is a good association because the marina and its surroundings really influence and determine the character of this city. Vilamoura Marina is a port where you can park the most expensive and powerful yachts that can be seen on the Algarve coast. The port is large, there is room for about 1000 boats and luxury yachts. According to its owners, it is the largest marina in southern Europe.
The main access road to Vilamoura is the EN125 road towards the coast. For someone visiting Vilamoura or even the Algarve for the first time, the road can make a big impression. It is wide (two lanes on each side) and planted with palm trees growing in neat green lawns as if they were part of the Vilamoura golf courses located on each side. In addition to the Vilamoura golf courses, you will pass luxury buildings, tourist resorts and housing estates inhabited year-round by locals and expatriates alike.
The name Vilamoura is a mixture of two words vila and moura, which in French means Mauritanian village. Nobody knows if there was a Mauritanian village at the time, but the name of this Algarve town is composed like that. It is in any case difficult to find traces of the Moors today in Vilamoura and it is possible that the name was simply invented by marketing experts or even by the original owners of the place.
History of Vilamoura in the Algarve
The history of Vilamoura is quite short since this Algarve town is no more than 50 years old. From a formal and administrative point of view, Vilamoura is not a city but a place and a tourist enterprise of the size and appearance of a small town. Only 50 years ago, Vilamoura did not exist.
Before that, the area of today’s Vilamoura was called Quinta da Quarteira and belonged to the heirs of the owner of the estate, João António Júdice Fialho. It was a large working farm and an agricultural enterprise equipped with modern machinery for the time. After the death of João António Júdice Fialho (1934), the estate began to decline gradually.
Vilamoura was created exactly on October 27, 1964. On that day the heirs João António Júdice Fialho, owners of the areas of Quinta da Quarteira, sold them to a tourism company financed by the Americans and a Portuguese bank. Vilamoura, the largest private tourist centre in Europe was to be built there. The agreement was signed by President Artur Cupertino de Miranda. He is an important figure since he was a visionary and the creator of Vilamoura. Today, one of the squares is named after him and his portrait stands in the middle of one of the roundabouts.
In 1996, the Lusotur company passed into the hands of the capital group André Jordan, a financier of Polish origin. He is also an important person, Mr. Andrzej is called the “father of Portuguese tourism”. The company changed its name from Lusotur to Lusort. Ten years later in 2004, the next owner of Lusort was a Spanish bank.
At present, Vilamoura is still managed by Lusort, which, in addition to the marina, also owns several golf courses, hotels and other facilities in the area, covering about 800 hectares. Since April 2015, the majority of the shares of this company are held by the American investment fund Lone Star.
