Sintra Lisbon region
The city is located in the middle of many hills, about 30 km west of Lisbon. Because of its beautiful romantic architecture, Sintra has been inscribed on the UNESCO World Heritage List. The most beautiful monuments include the National Palace of Pena, one of the Seven Wonders of Portugal. As it is located on a hill with good visibility, Sintra is easily visible from Lisbon. Another attraction is the Moorish castle above the city. Its towers offer an impressive view of the region.
Little Sintra has 5 castles on the hills and 10 palaces, the most magnificent of which is the Palacio da Pena. A luxuriant vegetation and all the charms of a refined resort, supposed to be used only for summer relaxation. Right in the centre of the town is the Palacio Nacional from the early 16th century, with its two characteristic conical domes. The Portuguese monarchy remained there until 1880.
The last inhabitant of the palace was Maria Pia, the grandmother of the Portuguese King Manuel II, who was forced to abdicate in 1910. The magnificent patios of the palace are full of blue azulejos and orange trees.
Thanks to its location in the valley of the Sierra de Sintra, a special microclimate has been created here. Lord Byron wrote in a letter to a friend that Sintra was his most beautiful place on earth. Today, the town is a UNESCO National Heritage Site and the surrounding forests belong to the Cascais National Park.
Quinta da Regaleira is a magnificent mansion with a beautiful park full of caves, wells, fountains and uniquely shaped buildings that are only a few minutes walk from each other. A walk through the tunnels is a must, for example to the bottom of the Initiation Well – if we look up we can see a piece of blue sky and around it the spiral staircase divided into nine levels.
Castelo dos Mouros overlooks the old town, whose defensive walls meander over the local hills. The Moorish castle was built in the 8th / 9th centuries by the Moors, who ruled the Iberian Peninsula at that time. After the conquest of the castle by the Christians, it was transformed into a fortress. From the ramparts, there is a panoramic view of Sintra and the nearby Pena Palace. Entrance to the castle is subject to a fee.
From Lisbon to Sintra, you can take the train from Rossio station. Travel time is about 40 minutes.
