Cascais, Lisbon region
The city is located in the western part of Portugal, about 25 km west of Lisbon. Until the beginning of the 20th century it was a small fishing village, which, thanks to the nearby fortress, was also of strategic importance. The real development of Cascais only occurred at the beginning of the 20th century, when Portuguese monarchs liked to visit Cascais. During the Second World War, royal families from all over Europe began to come here. Nowadays, the city is a flourishing tourist centre with an excellent infrastructure, picturesque streets, a marina and a wide range of water sports.
The region is located in the southwest of Portugal, directly on the ocean. The Mediterranean climate prevails here. The region is overgrown with pine forests, you can find orange and almond groves. The water can be variable and high waves can form, that’s why this place is appreciated by surfers.

- Lisbon the capital of Portugal. Some say it looks like Paris in the 1920s, full of alleys and pubs. To see: the center of the seventeenth century, the monument to the discoveries, the Monastery of Jerónimos and the church of Santa Maria (with the tomb of Vasco da Gama) and the craftsmen’s district Alfama.

History of Cascais
In ancient times, Lusitanians settled in this region. The area around Lisbon could also have been a trading place for the Phoenicians, but current archaeological research does not confirm this information. This area was also associated with the Templar Order. Shortly after the capture of Lisbon in 1147, Alfonso I defeated Maurint Sintra. The most interesting historical city in this region is Lisbon, which in 1255 became the capital of Portugal thanks to King Alfonso III.
Tourists are also attracted to Fatima where in 1917 three shepherds announced that their mother had appeared to them and revealed three secrets of Fatima. The Catholic Church recognized these revelations as a miracle in 1930.
It is also worth visiting Estoril, which until the beginning of the 20th century was mainly a fishing port. But tourism developed there later. After the Second World War, Estoril was the residence of Jan Burbon, the fourth son of the Spanish King Alfonso XIII. In 1972 the election of Miss Europe took place in Estoril. The title was awarded to Monika Sarp from Germany.
Sports, leisure and beaches in Cascais
Active leisure enthusiasts have a choice of water sports (windsurfing is particularly popular), boat trips (the area from the sea is beautiful), walks (many terraces with views provide a variety of visits), horse riding and fishing (the local waters are full of many species of fish).
The region has a real nightlife and there are countless shopping possibilities. You can have fun until dawn, thanks to the many pubs, clubs and discos.
When you go to the restaurant, you can choose between luxury restaurants on sophisticated terraces with sea views and smaller, more intimate pubs with live music (concerts). When you order meals, you can choose cuisines from all over the world. However, I recommend the fish, which is always fresh.
You can’t forget that Portugal is a land of fine wines: the regional white and red wines Lagoa, Taviro and Alentejo are worth a visit.
