The Algarve

The Algarve offers a large number of simple and local leisure activities such as the beach, but also many excursions around the theme of the sea: jet-skiing, boat cruises, water sports, meeting dolphins…

The Algarve is an almost uninterrupted strip of beaches, stretching from east to west from Monte Gorda to Lagos (about 150 km) and protected from the north winds by mountain ranges. The western part of the coast is famous for its beautiful rocky beaches and the eastern, rather flat part has excellent sandy coastlines.

The Algarve is a perfect place for an active holiday in Portugal. Golf, tennis and water sports are also popular, as well as horse riding and athletics.

The cities of Lagos and Faro are connected by regular buses. They also serve neighbouring Spanish cities such as Seville and Huelva. A one-way ticket from Faro to Seville will cost EUR 16 and the journey time is 4-5 hours.

Albufeira is particularly famous for its cuisine: the sardines and sea bass are prepared in different ways and the local signature dish is a cataplan of fish or seafood, prepared in tall pans.

Entertainment, excursions and attractions in the Algarve

The red stone castle of Silves, the old quarter of the city of Lagos, surrounded by walls. In the Algarve, you can visit sharks, take a yacht trip, visit a bullfight, visit Spain and even Morocco.

In the Algarve you will find four water parks, the ZooMarin Dolphinarium, numerous golf courses and tennis schools with excellent courses, the second class diving club in Europe and excellent conditions to practice this leisure activity.

In the Portuguese water parks, sunbathe on a special lawn. Sun loungers are available for self-service at the pools.

In Vale do Lobo you will find many restaurants serving Italian, French and Chinese cuisine, shops and discos. There are three water parks near Vilamoura. The resort also has the largest yacht club in Europe. Quarteira is known for the Algarve’s most popular nightclub “Kadok”.

Gourmets will find good and cheap seafood restaurants in Portimau and sea lovers can take a walk along the coast. Other activities are about the same as in the rest of the Algarve: golf, diving, beach, sea, cruises, dolphins…

Algarve: the most beautiful beaches

PRAIA DA BORDEIRA – Praia da Bordeira is located in the western part of the Algarve. Close to the beach there is a free car park with plenty of free spaces. From the car park to the beach you have to walk a longer section and on the way you will pass shallow water that enters the land. Praia da Bordeira is huge and even in high season everyone should find a place there. The view from the nearby cliffs is incredible. The beach is long and very wide.

PRAIA DO AMADO – Three kilometers south of Praia da Bordeira is another beautiful beach: Praia do Amado. There is also free parking. There are several surf schools on the beach if you want to try your hand at it. The beach is beautiful and you can find a bistro.

PRAIA DO BELICHE – Praia do Beliche is a small beach stuck between the cliffs near Cabo de Sao Vincente. The parking there is free but small, so it is recommended to come early to this Algarve beach. You will have to go down a long staircase to get to this beach which is not big but offers some privacy. After going down, you can go to the north end of the beach to cross a small cave.

FORTALEZA DO BELICHE – Fortaleza do Beliche is the remains of a fortress built in the 16th century. It is located halfway between Praia do Beliche and the lighthouse. There are beautiful views from the cliffs.

PONTA DA PIEDADE – The Cape of Mercy (Ponta da Piedade) is in my opinion the most beautiful place in the Algarve. It is not only a beach but cliffs up to 20 m high have formed. Between the cliffs of the cape you will find several beaches including the famous Praia do Camilo and Praia Dona Ana.

Some cliffs overlooking the ocean create amazing rock formations in the form of arches or small caves. You can use the local excursion services to take a boat and go to the cliffs from the water.

On the land side, you can walk down steep stairs almost to the ocean to see these amazing creations of nature. At the tip of the cape is a lighthouse and free parking.

PRAIA DO CAMILO – Praia do Camilo is a very small beach (I would say a micro beach) located between the cliffs of Ponta da Piedade, on the east side. In the surroundings you will find a small free car park. There are long stairs leading to the beach and the place is very charming.

PRAIA DA BONECA – Praia da Boneca is another nice little beach. To reach it, first go down to Praia do Camilo and then head to the other side through a tunnel dug into the rock.

PRAIA DONA ANA – Praia Dona Ana is located about 500 m from Praia do Camilo and Praia da Boneca to the north. There is free parking at the beach but it is very crowded as there are hotels in the area. The beach will probably also be crowded but you can certainly find a free parking space nearby. The place is surrounded by beautiful cliffs.

PRAIA DOS TRES IRMAOS – The beach dos Tres Irmaos (Three Brothers Beach) is located east of the places mentioned above, near the town of Portimao. The beach is large but it is no longer surrounded by cliffs like the previous ones. In its eastern part there are several nice rock formations.

PRAIA DE BENAGIL – Praia de Benagil is located near the town of Benagil. There is a free car park on the top of the cliff and you will have to walk to the beach. The beach is sunk deep between the high cliffs. You can buy a ticket to go to the Algar cave in Benagil nearby. This costs about a dozen euros per person.

PRAIA DA MARINHA – Praia da Marinha is one of the most beautiful beaches in the Algarve, located east of Praia de Benagil.

There is also a car park there but don’t arrive too late or plan to wait a little while to find a space. The beach is surrounded by high cliffs and you can hear the cicadas.

The beach is narrow but after the descent, I advise you to go to the end to admire the rocky bridges.

PRAIA DA GALE OESTE – The last place I put in the most beautiful beaches of the Algarve is near the hotel Praia da Gale Oeste. Picturesque wooden jetties will take you to this beach which is rather wide and not very crowded.
