Ideas for Discovering Lisbon
Any visit to Lisbon should start with the hilltop views and the Alfama district. This is the oldest part of the capital and its name comes from the Arab period. There are many beautiful alleys, a medieval city atmosphere, narrow, winding and steep streets: all the charm of Portuguese architecture.
Two monuments in particular deserve all your attention on the heights of the city: the patriarchal cathedral of Sé (It is the largest temple of the city, rebuilt several times in different styles but recently its original Romanesque character has been restored). The treasures of Lisbon Cathedral include the famous reliquary of St. Vincent and the monstrance entirely covered with precious stones.
Higher up at an altitude of 110 m above sea level is the castle of São Jorge. Originally it was a fortress built by the Moors in the twelfth century on Visigothic foundations. Then the Catholic Monarchs transformed it into a residence.
Much lower above the waters of the Tagus is the Baixa district. The modest façades of the houses date from the time of the reconstruction after the earthquake. Unlike the Alphama, the streets in this part of the city intersect at right angles.
The centre of the district is the Plaza del Comerçio, rebuilt after 1755, with a statue of King Joseph I on horseback. Near the square is the Church of Conceição Velha. Its magnificent facade is worth a visit. This district is today the centre of the city. At the northern end are three lively squares: Praça Dom Pedro IV, Praça da Figueira and Praça dos Restauradores from where the magnificent Avenida da Liberdade starts, surrounded by trees and bushes.
The difference in height between this district of Lisbon and the heights of the city gave birth to the Santa Justa lift, built in 1902 by a pupil of Gustaw Eiffel. The lift completes the 30 m difference in height between the Baixa and Bairro Alto districts (a district from the colonial era). To this day in its original state, only a few magnificent luxury villas have been preserved. Currently, in this neighborhood are the most expensive apartments in Lisbon.
In the upper district there is a small observation park: Santa Luzia. In the park of Largo das Portas do Sol stands the 17th century palace of Count Azurara. It currently houses the Museum of Decorative Arts. To the east of the palace, in the Graça district on the domed hill, stands the church of Nossa Senhora da Graça, which hosts numerous pilgrimages.
A particularly interesting part of the city is Belem. It is the district of Lisbon that suffered the least from the earthquake. Here you can discover ancient and precious monuments of the city such as the Monastery of Jerónimos: an architectural gem of the capital of Portugal.
Belem was the port from which the explorers’ ships set sail. In the chapel founded by King Henry the Sailor, predecessor of the monastery, the navigators prayed before the voyage. Tradition attributes the construction of the monastery as an offering to Vasco da Gama’s successful voyage to India.
In front of the monastery on the Tagus, the monument to geographical discoveries is also worth visiting, as well as the Torre de Belém, a tower whose purpose was to defend the port against attacks from the sea.
Entertainment in Lisbon
Live music concerts take place in many restaurants in Lisbon . In addition to traditional fado music, you will also have many opportunities to learn more about African or Brazilian music. There are about 30 fado clubs in the capital, including the most famous Casa de Fado and Adega Tipica . Most of them are located in the city heights and in the Alfama district.
In the big halls and stadiums are organized concerts of American and English rock stars and performances by Brazilian singers. There are also many theatres and cinemas in the city. They are located both in the centre and on the outskirts of Lisbon.
In the church of Saint Rocha in the upper city, in the cathedral, in the Estrela basilica and in the churches there are also sometimes free concerts and recitals.
You can also go on a bullfighting tour. This is a colourful spectacle in which the bullfighter does not kill the bull but only has to catch it and immobilise it for a while. In Lisbon, the largest bullring is in Campo Pequeno and was built in 1892.
Throughout the year various cultural and regional festivals are held in the city and matching your holiday in Lisbon with these dates can be a good thing. The most festive month in Lisbon is the month of June when the feast of Saint Anthony and the Lisbon festivities take place. An event during which free concerts and exhibitions are held all over the capital of Portugal.
