Porto and Northern Portugal
The Douro River flows through northern Portugal, offering the world Port wine. The vineyards that produce this world-famous wine run along the river and its valleys. It is in these vineyards of the region that the favourite drink of the Portuguese people on a hot day was born: green wine.
The north of the country is more traditional. Here you will find cultivated land, vineyards and a more traditional atmosphere like an incredible journey back in time: stone houses, locals in traditional dress, herds of horses in the middle of the road, sources of drinking water and friendly inhabitants in good spirits.
Some villages with their castles have remained as if frozen in the medieval era with ancient churches and weekend fairs. The provinces are less appreciated by tourists but it is nevertheless here that you can discover Portugal in all its authenticity with the incredible beauty of nature hidden, for example in the National Park of Peneda-Gerês, the valley of the river Minho or the romantic area of Tras-O-Montes.
The most famous city in the north of Portugal is of course Porto, which gave its name to the country. Here you will see half-destroyed houses next to luxuriously restored dwellings, a large number of cellars in Vila Nova de Gaia and an endless number of cafés on the quays where you can take a break and enjoy the magnificent view from the bridge over the river.
Many azulejos are scattered all around Porto, as well as many absolutely magnificent sites. Porto is a good place to stroll through the maze of narrow streets and admire shops or unusual houses.
Visiting the north of Portugal, you can also discover Guimaraes, elected European Capital of Culture in 2012, which keeps in its architecture the spirit of the Middle Ages but in its culture a young and lively soul. The town centre is very well preserved with its authentic narrow streets. On Friday evenings, the central square is transformed into a large bar with many tables in the street and locals enjoy beer and sangria while listening to music.
