Cascais and Estoril: complete guide to the Lisbon Riviera 2026

Cascais and Estoril are part of what is known as the Lisbon Riviera. Two small towns along the ocean that practically fit into each other. This seaside destination will not leave you indifferent, rest assured! The ocean water, even in the hottest summer, does not exceed 18°C. So you don’t necessarily have to come here to swim, but rather to breathe the air, walk along the ocean, admire the view of the coast and its old houses, bask on the beach in the sun and enjoy the thousand and one ways to relax in this beautiful region. Surfers will also love it. After all, visiting Lisbon without seeing the ocean would be a shame.

Guided tour of Cascais and Estoril

You will find in this article some information to visit Cascais and Estoril on your own, but some of you will prefer a visit organised by English-speaking guides who know the area well and can take you to the best places, optimise your visit to Cascais, Estoril, Sintra or Cabo da Roca, and above all explain the history and importance of each place to the Portuguese.

Cascais has no world-class attractions, but the houses on the waterfront are very interesting. The most important thing in Cascais is the view of the coast, the amazing colours of the dark blue ocean, the blue sky, the coastal cliffs and the yellow sandy beaches. Bicycle rides along the coast are also very popular.

For your information, there is the Lisboa Card: a card that will give you access to many discounts on transport, monument tickets and even free entrance to some of Lisbon’s sights. How to get to Cascais

To get to Cascais, go to Cais do Sodré station in Lisbon, from where you can take any train to Cascais — it is the last station. Trains are very frequent, make few stops, and the journey takes no more than 40 minutes, running first along the Tagus then along the ocean. The fare is €2.90 one way. You won’t wait more than 10 minutes.

If you want to visit Estoril and enjoy seaside walks, here is my one piece of advice: take the train from Lisbon, stop at Estoril station, walk through the tunnels to the beach just behind the station, and walk all the way to Cascais. You won’t regret it!

How to rent a bike in Cascais

In Cascais you can rent a bike for free through the municipal Bicas service (basic bike, no gears). You will need to show your passport or driving licence and leave your contact details. Three stations available:

  • Near Cascais train station (Largo da Estação, Cascais)
  • Tourist Office, Praça 5 de Outubro 2750-320 Cascais
  • Near the Casa da Guia shopping centre (Av. Nossa Senhora do Cabo, Cascais)

Free Bicas bike rental hours:

  • Summer (1 May – 30 September): daily 8:00am–7:00pm
  • Winter (1 October – 30 April): daily 9:00am–4:00pm

Arrive early to secure a bike. For better quality, I recommend the paid rental at the train station: around €4/hour or €7 for 4 hours. The cycle tracks are approximately 16 km long — the most popular runs along route 247. The Passeio Marítimo (10 km walking and cycling path between Cascais and Estoril) is the most scenic option.

Things to see in Cascais and Estoril

Visit Cascais city center

Boca do Inferno is about 2 km from Cascais train station along the coast. This picturesque natural rock formation is most dramatic during storms, but a sunny day makes for a far more enjoyable walk. Nearby you’ll find an observation terrace and a café.

The Farol da Guia lighthouse, 5 km from the train station, is worth the journey — best reached by bike on the safe, traffic-free cycle paths.

The centre of Cascais is small and easily explored on foot. The small alleys reveal typical Portuguese architecture and traditional wave-patterned paving in black basalt and white sandstone. In 2006, a monument to King Charles I was erected on the Cascais dam — it was he who chose the town as the royal summer residence, transforming this former fishing village into a fashionable Atlantic resort.

Estoril is home to the legendary Casino Estoril — which inspired Ian Fleming when writing James Bond. The gardens and Tamariz beach are also well worth a visit.

I would strongly recommend allocating a full day to this region or booking a guided tour of Cascais, Sintra and Estoril to make the most of your visit.
