Book a hotel in Lisbon: great ideas!
My Top Hotels in the Portuguese Capital
If you have decided to visit Lisbon, the beautiful capital of Portugal, you will find below a list of 12 tested and validated hotels. Below you can check the results of your trip and find the best hotels in Lisbon for those who prefer a good location and value for money!
Many tourists who travel in Europe travel to Portugal before going on to other destinations and sometimes just spend a night or two in the city. Lisbon’s hotel sector is very well structured with options for hostels, hotels and apartments. Several international chains are present in the city, but regional structures such as Pestana, HF Hotels or SANA Hotels still manage to do well.
Although Lisbon welcomes business trips, it has a very large holiday tourist public, which makes the rates higher on weekends. Don’t forget to book your hotel in Lisbon in advance if you intend to travel during the holidays and at weekends. An important tip is to try to book a hotel near a metro station or bus stop. This way it will be easier to get around the city.

Holidays in Lisbon: where to stay
Most hotels in Lisbon are concentrated in a relatively small area, mainly between the Plaza del Comercio and the Marquês de Pombal statue (where the Marques de Pombal metro station is located). This “concentration” of hotels makes the choice of accommodation and possible guided tours of Lisbon much easier since many tourist attractions are located nearby. My favourite area for accommodation is the area around the Baixa-Chiado, Rossio and Restauradores metro stations. Check the following page for more information about the different districts of Lisbon, it can help you book the right hotel in the right place.
The city centre of Lisbon and Chiado is one of the oldest and most historic places in the city. There are small stone streets (many with limited access for cars), old architecture buildings of a few storeys and tourist attractions such as the Arco da Rua Augusta, the Chiado warehouses and the Elevador de Santa Justa (which leads to the upper city). This is an excellent area to walk around where the old buildings contrast with the dozens of contemporary shops in the streets! A charming place for day and night and an excellent choice for those who have little time and want a central place to visit Lisbon! Bairro Alto is right next to this area and is excellent for enjoying the nightlife. If you choose to stay in this area, it is best to visit it on foot. Lisbon is not a dangerous city and you can walk through its streets at any time of the day or night. On the other side of the Bairro Alto is Alfama, which is also the historical center of Lisbon but with a smaller number of hotels and many coastlines.
The Praça do Rossio (officially Praça Pedro IV), well known in the city, is another excellent area to book your hotel in Lisbon (You can check the following page if you are looking for a luxury hotel elsewhere in Portugal). You can do a lot of things here on foot. The Rossio train station and the National Theatre are located in this square. There are restaurants, cafes and shops in the surrounding area. Staying close to this square you will be very well located and can easily use the tram services of the Portuguese capital.
A little further north of the Tagus is Liberdade Avenue, which is one of the main avenues of Lisbon. Along the road there are hotels, theatres, popular shops and other famous brands. Along the Avenida there are three stations: at the closest point to the historical area is the Restauradores station, in the middle the Avenida station and on the most modern stretch the Marquês de Pombal station (which is an ideal area for those looking for bigger hotels).
Even further north is the area of Avenidas Novas with more modern hotels often sought after by business travellers. It is an area closer to Lisbon airport and the El Corte Inglês store (which is in fact practically a shopping mall because it is so big). This area of Lisbon has wide avenues, modern buildings, more spacious hotels with usually parking.
Moreover, for those who are in Lisbon and just passing through during a connection, it is possible to stay close to Lisbon airport which is about 8 km from the city centre (Baixa-Chiado). The airport is close to the Oceanarium and the Oriente train station, from where trains leave for Porto and other European cities. See the next page for information on the different ways to get to and from Lisbon-Porto.
